The Karoo

The Karoo is a vast, semi-arid desert that covers a third of South Africa’s landmass. The region extends northwards from the fringes of the Cape Peninsula into the southern reaches of Namibia, and features a landscape of rugged mountains, ochre plains and isolated towns.

An ancient land

The Karoo is an ancient place that has survived 250 million years of geological evolution. In the distant past, its plains were home to herds of dinosaurs. As the earth settled the dinosaurs succumbed to extinction, some of humankind’s earliest ancestors hunted and foraged in the Karoo’s mountains, swamps and forests.

In the early 1800s, the first Western settlers arrived in the Karoo, moving into the region to farm sheep. By this time, the wetlands of the Karoo had long since disappeared, leaving behind grasslands and arid plains inhabited by herds of game and the nomadic tribes of the Khoi and San people.

Endless space and beauty

Even though the animal herds and tribes that once lived in the Karoo are gone, this region has retained much of its wild beauty, and remains largely untouched by modern development. As a result of water scarcity, the Karoo is sparsely populated, with its inhabitants confined to the towns and farms that cluster beside its few sources of natural water.

The Karoo’s tranquillity, vast swathes of empty wilderness and quaint towns have attracted those seeking space to reflect, heal and relax for over a century. The Victorian towns of the southern Karoo have long been popular destinations for spiritual wellness holidays amongst travellers who wish to escape the stress of city life.

The Karoo region is also home to some of South Africa’s most spectacular natural attractions. These include the colourful wildflowers that carpet many areas of the Karoo during spring, the dramatic sweep of the Swartberg Mountains, the silent chambers of the Cango Caves and the pristine isolation of the Gamkaskloof valley.
